PLEASE READ IF YOUR DOG HAS CHRONIC LIVER DISEASE: The dog food recipes in this cookbook for dogs are fine if your dog is in early stage liver disease and has elevated liver enzymes.  However, they are not for dogs suffering from chronic liver disease such as Copper Storage Disease or Hepatic Encephalopathy when the liver produces too much ammonia in the blood or the dog starts to store copper in the liver.

Major symptoms of copper storage disease include yellowing of the eyes and skin. Major symptoms of hepatic encephalopathy include swelling in the abdomen area (ascites), staggering, head pressing, chronic diarrhea and/or vomiting, constant drooling, anorexia, seizures, sudden blindness and confusion (especially after meals).  Both of these are very serious late stage symptoms of liver disease in your dog and the recipes are not for these conditions.

In this case, please use our contact form for help with those diet issues.

Yes! This book includes several homemade dog food recipes for dogs who need a low phosphorus diet!

Yes!  Unlike other cookbooks for dogs, “Homemade Dog Food Recipes for Sick Dogs” was coauthored by a certified nutritionist. Darlene Rudnick has been a student of nutrition since 1987 and her qualifications certainly speak for themselves!

While I too have been working with nutrition for dogs for decades, I do not hold a degree.  For this reason, I wanted to work with an expert on nutrition for pets, and Darleen has been studying nutrition health since 1987. Here are Darlene’s credentials:

  • A Master’s of Science in Holistic Nutrition
  • Certification as a Holistic Nutrition Practitioner
  • Conducts ongoing workshops on nutrition
  • Is an Instructor at the Southern Institute of Healing Arts
  • Owns and runs Purely Pets Wellness Center

Not at all! Whether your dog is suffering from current illness or whether they are completely healthy, the recipes in this book are designed to create well-rounded and appealing meals!

Just keep in mind that whenever you cook for your dog it is always recommended that you include the following healthy supplements:

    • Multivitamin Tablet or a Multivitamin Powder
    • Calcium
  • A good oil such as organic, cold-pressed coconut oil

Yes! The kidney disease recipes in this book are safe for all levels of Creatinine in the blood!

The recipes found in my book can be used for dogs with Early Stage Liver Disease. If your dog has elevated liver enzymes due to ammonia in the blood (Hepatic Encephalopathy) or he or she is vomiting bile due to early-stage liver disease; these recipes can be used. The recipes ARE NOT MEANT for dogs who are STORING COPPER in their liver.

If you’re not sure, please ask your vet if your dog has copper storage disease. Also, dogs who are in late-stage liver disease, may develop kidney problems and suffer seizures associated with their liver problems.

If this is the case for your dog, then the recipes in this book for liver disease ARE NOT recommended. I recommend talking to a pet nutritionist who can personalize recipes for your dog in either of these cases.

IS HOME COOKING FOR MY DOG GOING TO BE EXPENSIVE?

No! You’ll be surprised at how much money you will save by following the recipes in “Home Cooking for Sick Dogs.” Consider the cost of a bag of prescription dog food. Then consider the cost of treating uncontrolled health issues in your sick dog. Now consider the cost of basic nutritious foods and the long-term health of your pet…

Backed by nutritional science, the dog food recipes in this cookbook not only provide your dog with healthy, whole nutrition, but they also allow you to cater your dog’s specific needs by supplementing deficiencies caused by illness.

I found this book very easy and helpful to use. I’m not a cook by any means and am able to make these recipes. My dog won’t eat any prescription foods and was very sick with more than one diagnosis addressed in the book. He loves the recipes. Also, any questions I had were answered immediately by email with kindness and expertise with a passion for what they are doing. Thank you!

Strongly recommend this book and following Janie's advice! I cannot thank Janie enough for giving me the gift of time with my dog.

Ordering this book and following Janie's advice has given my dog Pedro a new lease on life! I would STRONGLY recommend purchasing this book and following every bit of advice on this site and from Janie directly. If you're going through the pain and struggle with a sick dog, Janie will help ease your own anxiety while helping your dog recover from illness and have a much better quality of life. Pedro is 14 and became very ill, wasn't able to digest food, was in a lot of pain where it got to the point where a hospice vet gave a prognosis of barely 4 weeks. Later that night I found this cookbook and reached out in desperation to Janie and followed her advice. It has almost been 7 weeks since then and Pedro is thriving on his new diet and supplement routine. His digestive system is back on track and he isn't in any pain. These recipes are easy to prepare and the supplement products quality are top notch. I am so thankful that my little dog is comfortable and forever grateful to Janie. Trust me, the only thing I wish I did differently was be able to find Janie sooner. Thank you thank you thank you!

I appreciate the information in the book and have put it to good use for my dog. – – I would have preferred it in print so I could have it with me and could refer to it without use of a computer.

Recipe Book Makes Cooking for Your Old Dog Foolproof!

    Robin A.

It was a blessing to come across this site! I'd already started cooking for my dog but I knew there were probably vital nutrients that were missing. This is book is wonderful and I recommend it 1,000%! It makes cooking for your dog so easy (most everything is done in a crockpot) and gives you all the supplements and additives you need so your dog can have a completely balanced meal. I have recommended this book to countless other owners of sick dogs (even not sick ones!) My dog loves her food and I am so grateful to have found this resource. I keep it on my phone so it's handy when I shop and cook. Wonderful!!!!!!!!!!!

    Definitely recommended!

My dog is 11years old and has severe pancreatitis and beginning stages of kidney disease. This book is a great introduction to feeding your dog a homemade balanced meal and it is so easy! I dont have a crockpot but i cook it on the stove and still comes out great, I just cook the vegetables first so they get soft coz my dog picks em out if they are hard haha i also cook with fresh organic vegetables instead of frozen so it took a couple of tries to get used to the portioning but I figured it out. Janie reached out to me to make sure I got the book and graciously responded to all my questions which was extremely helpful. My boy is doing so much better on his homemade diet and he absolutely loves food time! Also all the vitamins and supplements recommended in the book are a great addition and I believe are helping him as well. I can’t believe I had him on that awful dry processed food for so long when balanced homemade recipes are so easy. Thank you a thousand times for this very easy to read book!

    Hi Janie,

I wanted to thank you for providing the recipes and the recipe book. Also, for providing all of the information you have on the supplements and how they affect canines.

I’ve been feeding my dog your recipes for about a week now. I have also purchased and used all of the supplements. My dog has Cushings and liver problems so I’ve been looking for something to help her with that. I already see a change in her energy level and a change in her coat.

Her coat was dry and her fur was falling out in clumps. After 5 days, her coat is shinier and it feels softer. I can see that long term, this diet will be exactly what she needs. Thank you so much for your help and guidance.

It’s tough starting something like this, but it makes it a bit easier having someone around that can answer basic questions and who’s been through it and can understand the trials and tribulations of having a sick pet.

Roxie loves the recipes and has been responding very well to it. Thanks for being here and answering our questions.

I appreciate it so very much.

    Hello Janie,

Kinsler continues to do very well. We are now giving him fluids every other day to help flush out the toxins. His recent blood work report came back BUN- 74 /Creatinine 1.3. On October 2nd The BUN was at 72 and the Creatinine was at 1.6.

To us, the report came back good. We feel as thou he is maintaining his numbers.

Our Vet said we were doing a good job and Kinsler should have blood work done in 2 more months just to see how he is coming along. Kinsler has so much energy and eats 3 times a day. I'm constantly cooking for him.

Thank you Janie for all your help and your cookbook! I truly believe Kinsler wouldn't be here if it weren't for you.

    Your an Angel :innocent:
    Sincerely,
    Betty Bradford & Kinsler:paw_prints:
