Four Behaviors of Dog Owners That Are Considered Irresponsible

There are countless examples of bad behavior in the dog community, but most of the worst behavior comes thanks to those ill-considered dog owners. Like Mr. Miyagi said in The Karate Kid, “There are no bad students, only bad teachers.” Much in the same way, I believe there are no bad dogs, just bad owners.

A lot of what separates a good dog owner from a bad one amounts to common sense, but these days it seems like common sense just isn’t so common.

To help, I’ve decided to identify four things bad mannered dog owners do that can really annoy others.

Not Cleaning Up After Their Dogs

There are few issues that can taint relationships in a community worse than the dog owner that simply let his or her pooch poop all over the place and not pick it up.

If you’re not picking up after your dog, you’re not going to make many friends in your neighborhood.

And if you’re not packing a lot of extra bags with you, you’re not prepared enough.

Here’s a good article from Doctors Foster and Smith regarding the hazards of not cleaning up your dog’s waste.

In the event that you do run out of clean-up bags or you simply forget to bring the right equipment, make sure you return to the “scene of the crime” later to pick it up.  🙂

Allowing Their Dogs to Bark Incessantly

Pooping may be one of the biggest pet peeves on the planet, but running a close second is the owner that won’t stop their chatty pup from barking. Many of us have been around a particularly yappy canine, say at bed time.  We should be able to relate to how irritating a barking dog can be.

But some owners simply let the poor doggy go on and on without saying a word.

Please, have a little courtesy. Practice safe and compassionate techniques to prevent your dog from barking.  A barking dog is often is distress.

Not Using a Leash in Public Places

We’ve probably all seen those brazen owners who believe their pooch is among the friendliest and most benevolent creatures on the planet. These people are the ones who let their dogs walk alongside them like they’re good buddies.

But no matter how pleasant you think your dog is, the fact of the matter is that not all people are comfortable around our four-legged friends. Be courteous, follow leash laws and keep Fido under control when you’re out in public.

Allowing Their Dogs to Jump on People

We’ve all heard the excuses: “Oh, it’s okay. He’s just being sociable.” This generally occurs after someone’s dog, sometimes someone’s wet dog, has jumped up on a person without an express invitation.

You have to respect the personal space of others. No excuses. Keeping your pet on a leash should accomplish this goal, but you’ll also need to ensure that your pup knows how to behave around others. Remember to value how other people feel when you’re out with your dog.

As you can see, a lot of this is common sense. Sadly, many dog owners can come off as rude or uncaring and this can give others a bad impression.

Change the tide by showing your neighbors and friends that you and your dog can indeed be model citizens.
